Cartograph

Hand-drawn maps rebuilt as living documents, where every contour line carries its own quiet story.

Cartograph is an experiment in making maps feel less like reference material and more like documents you can read. Each contour line is annotated with the history of the ground it traces, surfaced gently as you move across the terrain.

The performance problem

The hard part was performance. Rendering thousands of vector paths and keeping the interactions smooth meant moving the heavy lifting onto a worker and only drawing what sits inside the viewport.

Restraint

What I enjoyed most was the restraint. The map says nothing until you ask it to, and then offers only as much as you lean in for.
